About the exhibition "Departures"

"Departures" is about the "departure" of the Hellenikon International Airport from the area of Hellenikon, as well as the "departure" of an entire era and aesthetic. The airport, which served as Athens' main airport for over 60 years, was replaced in 2001 by the "Eleftherios Venizelos" Athens International Airport. Its construction began in 1938, was interrupted by World War II, and saw significant development in the following years with modernizations and increased capacity, eventually serving up to 12 million passengers annually. On March 28, 2001, five Olympic Aviation aircraft without passengers departed from Hellenikon Airport, heading for the new Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. The Hellenikon airport closed, leaving behind a ghost of a bygone era. The photography project began in 2006 and continued in 2007 and 2008. The project was in progress while the airport was a ghost.
