Hellenic Ornithological Society

The Hellenic Ornithological Society was founded in 1982, during a time when nature conservation was not yet widespread.

A small group of people, seeing the threats that wild birds faced in Greece, decided to act. Through personal effort, struggle, and study, they managed to create the first organization dedicated exclusively to the study and protection of birds and their habitats.

For more than 40 years, the Ornithological Society has been working to ensure a sustainable environment. Its work includes:

Research and protection: Scientific records, research, and management actions in protected areas. Important examples include the Antikythera Bird Observatory and the Mid-winter Waterfowl Counts.

Information and awareness: Campaigns, events, and environmental education programs to raise public awareness.

Interventions and policy: Interventions to enforce environmental legislation and promote positions on critical environmental issues, as a national partner of BirdLife International.

Through these actions, the Ornithological Society continues to spread its wings, actively contributing to the protection of Greek biodiversity.
